Mike Clark - the BEDA Method
A Hull-based stress consultant has written a book about a therapy which can help ease different conditions through better breathing.
Mike Clark, a father-of-three from the Avenues, has come up with the BEDA Method, which develops the theory that most modern illnesses could be cured or improved upon by reducing the breathing rate.
BEDA allows people to take their health and well-being into their own hands through the art of breathing, diet, exercise and attitude, and it follows 18 years of research. The book, which will be published in early August, is titled “The BEDA Method, A Natural Disease Prevention & Health Preservation Treatment”.
Mike’s method has been based on the work of the late Ukrainian Professor Konstantin Buteyko. As a trainee doctor, the professor discovered that over-breathing meant people felt worse. In the case of asthma sufferers, by reducing the rate of breathing the asthma symptoms would reverse, although the exercises would have to be repeated over a number of weeks.
Stress causes hyperventilation and this is also a sign of the body is under stress. Mike says: “A healthy breathing rate at rest should be no more than 10 times a minute, through the nose and light. Poor breathing is a major factor in the cause or worsening of chronic conditions such as asthma, anxiety, high blood pressure, depression, headaches, high blood pressure and even obesity.”
Mike became one of the UK’s first Buteyko therapists in 2000 and went on to undertake further training at the Buteyko Institute in Moscow. The exercise programme takes 20 minutes per day, three times a week. The technique is now taught to NHS nurses at Coventry University.
The book also covers the importance of exercise, diet and attitude.
He says: “My theory is that almost all illnesses are the result of stress, whether it be emotional from work overload or physiological from a poor diet or patterns of worrying through anxiety. When we worry, for instance, the body produces adrenaline and makes digestion of food almost impossible. Ironically when we do get stressed, many of us not only carrying on eating but eat the worse types of food, usually high in sugar.”
Mike’s book also covers help to change unwanted behaviours such as smoking, over-eating and excessive drinking. He includes in the book a very powerful hypnotic suggestion script with full instructions that can be read by a partner or a friend.
So confident is he of the book, Mike has given up his day job as a energy advisor to concentrate on stress consultancy. He has been receiving the help of staff from the Hull Enterprise Partnership, the free business advice consultancy which is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, with action-planning and marketing.
Mike’s book will be available from www.bedamethod.com, or from health food shops, costing £9.95. He is also planning to bring his message to the people of Hull by explaining the benefits of his book via door-to-door selling. Mike says: “I know it sounds unusual to sell a book door-to-door especially one you have written yourself, but I believe passionately that health is the greatest gift we have.”
